Segambut Dalam - Restoran Hong Yean

This place is located inside Segambut Dalam, very near to the Jln Ipoh Yong Tau Foo as well as the famous Segambut Seafood Noodles. Its basically a make shift shops under a big tree, shady and quite cooling with fans.

The lady boss recommended their Vietnamese African fish... well in cantonese, talapia we called it african fish (fei chou yu). So its basically talapia deep fried then covered with spicy and sour vietnamese paste. The paste is greenish, looks like a blend with green bird chilis with with lime and a whole lot of stuff. First taste, it reminds me of the same of the same greenish paste I tasted in Thailand, looks like a very northern Thailand-Vietnam thing. Fish is crispy and the paste is quite good.

Next up are their own made beancurd, nothing fantastic and a little salty, I think I should start avoiding the restaurant own made beancurd from now on which are basically beancurd mixed with fish paste then deep fried.

A plate of vegetables to balance up the meal was included but some funny people questioned me for ordering vegetables saying there's already beancuard. Hehehe, people who don't vegetables as you can see :P


Last is the steaming hot claypot pork with salted fish or we called it the far lum poh. Its basically the fat part of the pork belly meat stir fried with salted fish. The lady boss remarked that this is one of their popular dish. Usually in most places, they keep the meat tender but in this place, they seems to fried it dry like a jerky, different but nice.

Total cost plus drinks for 4 pax is about RM56.00. KL rated I supposed but I think we could have been done with just 3 dishes or can get more people aboard with the same dishes next round ;).

PJ State - Duck Porridge

I have been eating in this place since I was kid, well most people refer to it as duck rice, but I usually refer to it as duck porridge because the porridge is my favourite since I was a kid ;)

The duck are braised or lou ngap in cantonese. Ducks are served with rice or porridge, you can also have side dishes like duck intestine, beancurds, salted veges, etc. Price is still ok and it remains one of my favourite spots to eat in the area.

This place only open for dinner and can be really packed on weekends, so come early to avoid disappointment. Its on Jalan Tengah, just next to UOB bank and Menara MPPJ in PJ Newtown. Pricing is still reasonable at this place, do check it out, yummy.

Jln Ipoh - Yong Tau Foo

This is a yong tau foo place near the Segambut-Jln Ipoh junction in KL, its been around for quite a long time used to be on the otherside of the road. Its just next to the overhead highway coming from Jalan Duta.

These place start crowding after 12.30pm and its parking will be packed then. I prefer to sit inside the restaurant as it has fan, the porch seems to be hot. Besides the usual yong tau foo, they also have a good rojak stall. Price is standard KL rate and there are a variety of other stuff besides yong tau foo like paper wrap chicken, etc.

KL - R.A. Nasi Lemak

Early weekdays morning in KL there is a busy place selling hot and steamy nasi lemak. This is in Jalan Raja Abdullah, just next to the Bank Pembangunan building at the traffic light crossing with Jalan Sultan Ismail.

This place serve good nasi lemak, there's a wide choice of dishes to choose from here and business is good. Coconut fragrant in the rice is good, sambal and curry is not too spicy, good place for a heavy breakfast :). I took some vege and a piece of fried chicken with mine nasi lemak plus a drink, below RM6, not bad for KL standard. You know KL what also more expensive :P.

Kota Kemuning - Sitr Fried Pan Mee

In Kota Kemuning, at Jalan Anggerik Vanila 31/R (who in MBSA think of such road name???) in Shah Alam, there's a Pan Mee Restaurant that specialized in Pan Mee. As we usually know there are the soup based and dry pan mee. This place however, have became a little creative and is offering Pan Mee in Curry, Hokkien Fried Pan Mee and my favourite Stir Fried Pan Mee.

As the pan mee itself is quite hard, unless you have good and soft pan mee, it would definitely not taste good frying it. This place proved that wrong with its Pan Mee version of char keoy teow. The pan mee is fried just like the usual keoy teow, you have eggs, pork, cockles, crispy pork lard, taugeh, prawns, etc. The noodles are soft like keoy teow and is able to absorb the taste yet filling and good. Its RM5.50 (5% service charge applies) per plate, a little on the high side but worth eating once in a while.

The hokkien fried one is not bad as well but the rest are normal to me. They have serve a good variety of snacks, side dishes and drinks. Environment is quite and relaxing, good place to hang out plus ample of parking!

USJ 1 - Back to F4 Fish Head

Went back to F4 again lately, just want to update my experience this time since I didn't manage to much dishes during the last visit. (see previous post)

This time we ordered the fish head curry, deep fried talapia with thai style, fried beancurd, fried vege, pork knuckle and marmite pork ribs. Pork knucles is really good, its different from most which are just deep fried, this one comes with its own sauce. The rest are ok but the beancurd are really salty, do avoid ordering that. But overall, this is really a food for value place to eat, all these plus 12 cans of beers for RM160.00.

To get there, just head to USJ1 and turn right on the traffic light before giant/mydin and turn left (3rd one) into Jalan Subang 4 then look for F4 signboard on your right.

Sect 17, PJ - Pork Noodles with Pork Belly Pepper Soup

This is a RM4.20 pork noodles, besides the usually pork noodles ingredients, its add with pork belly and pepper soup. This makes the soup peppery and quite different from the norm. The soup is just nice, not too heavy and just nice. Recommended to try.

You can get this at Lucky Coffeeshop in Jalan 17/29 in Petaling Jaya. Its opposite the wet morning market and the burnt old cinema which is now a parking lot. Go early, crowd start to comes in after 12.30pm.

Makan Trip to the City of Angels

No... not the movie... its Bangkok... hehe... that's what it means in Thai, see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangkok

Bangkok, where else better to go on a makan trip but here, being the most experienced person in Bangkok and the only light bulb among the 3 couples (the shopping toursts, the lost tourists and the objective shoppers), I am their natural guide here ;). Basically this is a shop, eat, shop, eat trip in this crowded city which have like almost half the population of Malaysia.

If you ask me, I think the best food are street, as we are on the way on Day 1 for our lunch after our check in, I was already checking out the street food on the way to the sky train station. My favourite would simply be deep fried pork with basil leaves (moo pad krapow). Its simply marinated pork deep fried with basil, simply tasting and tender, a pack is 20 baht. Also got some deep fried chicken skin to share with shopping tourists.

Strangely our first stop for lunch is Tony Romas, which is a western restaurant supposed to serve the best pork ribs (the one in Malaysia don't serve pork). Highlights here are the onion loaf which is huge, just think of it a big onion ring... hehee... and of course the baby back ribs. The ribs are worth trying but the rest are ok. Then its time to shop, walk, shop, walk, shop... just keeps going. Break for tea at MBK's foodcourt, seems to have everything here but couldn't compare with the foodcourt in Paragon, that one is something else ;).

Not to be long winded next up is dinner at Chinatown at Yao Wa Raj, here we have curry crab meat, fried squids, tomyam gong, mussels, fried rice (you have to eat fried rice in Bangkok, they are really good everywhere), vege, etc. This place is in the middle of Yao Wa Raj, open air, food is quite good but not exactly cheap. As there is nothing much to see here, we head to Suan Lum Night Bazaar for... more SHOPPING!

Hotel breakfast is surprisingly so so the next day, so after sweating like a pig in Grand Palace we head for aircond lunch at MK, my favourite steamboat place. Its like coca but prices are much cheaper and the suki sauce is good, which in any case I brought 2 bottles from the Carrefour next to the hotel back... muahahaha... that explains why I went there with 1 luggage and came back with 2 :P

In MK, you order plates of meat, vege and anything you want to steamboat. Its clean, air condition and tasty. There also serve very good roast duck in MK which objective shopper have reminded me like more than 10 times since we reached Bangkok to eat that. So we had the duck and a whole bunch of stuff... see pix... lazy to explain (this is what happens when you wait to long to blog... haiya... busy with work mah... sob... )

After the good lunch and aching feet from shopping, me and the lost tourists (since I am their GPS, they have no choice but to follow me, muahahaha) went for some massage in Ratchadapisek. Went to the one in Jusco, cost 200 baht for 1 hour Thai massage, which I regret taking because that guy like trying to twist and break every bone in my body *sweat*. Foot massage here is 130 baht for 1 hour. After the "relaxing" and cracking, we tar pau the loads of street food outside Jusco back to the hotel. On the list includes bbq chicken and pork, these are good comes with slices of cucumber, ginger (what?) and whole chili padi (crazy!), a whole bunch of other bbq stuff and most important of all, some juicy crispy bugs! Yeap, bugs, I ATE bugs in Bangkok... and you know what, they taste nothing like chicken. A palm full of grasshoppers cost 20 baht and I top that with another 20 baht of worms. The hawker top it with lots of pepper and spray these orange looking liquor which I think are oil? onto the bugs. Worms are ok, no juice inside, just dry skin. Grasshopper on the other hand, is ok if you have a strong control over your mind. I had 2 worms and 1 grasshopper and that was my limit. The mind is still more powerful... hahahaha... couldn't help but remind myself, you eating a bug, its a bug, its a bug... hahaha

After the buggy-licious experience, we need some alcohol to kill the germs in the bugs in case there is any. So we head to the best watering hole in Bangkok, Tawandang http://www.tawandang1999.com/. You get dinner, in house brewed beer and loads of entertainment. Reservation is a must at this place, otherwise expect to sit outside and wait for quite a while. The pork knuckle here is excellent, not forgetting the german sausages and a bunch of usual thai dishes. The beer here, sure best la, reasonable price too, about 750 baht for 3 litres of freshly brewed beer? Mana mau cari... in fact, comparing dining here and at Tony or Yao Wa Raj, this place is definitely worth it!

Next day is Chatuchak day, lots of snacking, walking, sweating and emptying the wallet here. With loads of big plastic bags on our hands, we head to Robinson in Ratchadapisek for lunch at the food court. I love the crispy pork fried with kale here and the other yummy dishes here is their tomyam. After a quick lunch, we decided to walk around and don't know what curse Thailand put on tourists, few of us started to shop again, hehe... I also mou tin tin bought a pair of shoes :P.

Wanted to makan at Sukhumit near the Westin hotel, which have a local Thai stall selling northern Thai food, but seems to be closed on Sunday, so we just makan at a nearby Thai restaurant, not too costly for a tourist spot and not bad either the food there. Its somewhere back lane near the Asok station. After dinner, I need to show the tourists the infamous Pat Phong. At Silom, we whack more street food before calling the night.

The last day we shoot out to MBK again for last minute shopping, kiasu betul, but for the shopping tourist, they need to finish up their bahts... hehehe. Before coming back, we stopped by for Thai street food at Paragon's mall. The price difference is ok here, only 2 baht more per street food than those on the street. They have this funny thing where they fried the whole century egg, then the bananas fritters here have lots of sesame seeds and taste different and more.

Before checking out and heading back, we stopped at Swensen, to our surprise, a cup of 3 scoops of ice cream, with cream, with 4 pieces of brownies, bananas top with 1 piece of choc is only 59 baht!!! Why must Swensen here charge like RM25 for the same thing? Don't make sense!

I may not have mention above, but I think everyday we are at the Carrefour next to our hotel buying stuff, beer, shampoo, tooth paste, instants noodles, batteries, etc. They are still cheaper than Malaysia despite the 7% VAT. So, think... good place to retire? hmm.... :)

Johor Makan Trip - Part 2

The moment we reach JB, its back to city life, jam and traffic everywhere. We made our way to our little guesthouse at Jalan Datuk Sulaiman opposite Holiday Plaza. After checking in and a quick shower, we head out for dinner, with only the GPS coordinates given by Jack, we trusted the GPS and head there. Well, of course along the way we got a little lost on the GPS but hey, like I told my passengers, not like the others in the convoy will know, hehehe. Anyway, I was under the impression that this place serve all things bittergourd. Since Jack and family was there first and had to leave, I asked them to order for us. So the first is the bittergourd soup with meat balls, which is good but the rest are quite normal chinese rice dishes.

After dinner, we all went to Danga Bay, supposed to be the happening place to go at night in JB now. Its like an esplanade in Penang thingy, very happening, lots of cars and people, big fun fairs and stalls. Quite nicely done but the place is too big. One side are fairs and shops, the other side is the beach with huge gazebo by the sea. Feels more like a 2x2 kind of places with bicycle available for rental and all. Anyhow, most of the people took this as a photo opportunity while me and Edwin challenge ourselves to 2 games of pool :)

Was supposed to go supper at Tmn Sentosa as advised by my friend who frequents and used to stay in JB. He told me that the koay teow kia, deep fried yu kap (pigeon) and porridge is good there. But we have a quest before that, we need to go to Zon, the duty free complex in town first. Jack's friend is the owner of breakers there and told us to go for a drink. Joe whom have been there before told me that people just buy duty free liquor and consume it at the food court. So my impression is this pariah place, where you don't really need to bother about what you wear.

The whole group of us, armed with only shorts, t-shirts and slippers, went there and found out the breakers is a very nice pub connected to saliva the club next to it that have an ice bar. Wow, isn't that cool but dammit, look at how we dressed. Haha... I think in normal visits, the bouncer won't let us in, but we got VIP treatment this round. Thank god they put us on an isolated area of the pub which is the balcony, phew. We were offered a tour of the place but dressed the way I am, better not, paiseh!

Anyway, the beer is cheap, they are having a promo, we got 1 tower of beer at RM80 but free another one. So technically, its RM40 each. After 6 towers and rounds of bluff game, its finally closing time at 3am and time for us to head back to rest. Just as we are ready to go, fight scene occurred downstairs and we can see the cops dragging away some of the guys. Well, its not JB if that doesn't happened right?

Later we may our way to the parking and I made a quick stop at the washroom, as I walk I noticed there is a trail of blood to the washroom, then a pool in the toilet, as I got out to the lift to the carpark, the trail is there too. Thank god we came out slightly later, I wouldn't want to be there.

Ok, this is about makan trip, not blood and fights, hehe... so its 3am plus, everyone is tipsy or drunk (I have picture proof too, but unfortunately if I publish it here, someone will kill me), so we decided to skip supper and hit the sack . Since we paid RM20 per person for the night stay, I shall not talk about our rooms and beds.

Night morning, I got up early and join a few others out for breakfast. We first went to Jalan Badik where this corner coffee shop serve this mini koay teow. Its basically small pieces of koay teow replacing the usual wantan mee noodles. Quite interesting and the koay teow is soft but the portion is really small and expensive. Cost of living in JB is quite high I reckon. We later had a 2nd round of beef noodles at some shops behind Holiday Plaza, this is so so only, so not worth mentioning :P.

After breakfast its time to check out but how can we come to JB and not try Koay Teow Kia that I have heard so much. So I woke my friend up from his Sunday and ask him to direct me to this place in Taman Molek. This corner coffee shop is located Jalan 2/37 after the wet market (GPS: N1 31.320 E103 47.511). The koay teow kia is basically koay teow serve with soup from teow chew style braised duck, eggs and taufu (lor ark). The serving comes with a plate of mix braised duck, eggs, taufu and a bowl of koay teow. I fancy the mix braised serving more and its really nice.

All filled up to go, we then get out of JB and hit the NSE up to Yong Peng straight. We went for the famous yong peng fish ball, ok ok to me, but I prefer the fok chow fish ball in KL (I think the owner originates from Yong Peng too). Anyhow, the fish ball is taken with noodles, either soup or curry. But after 3 meals in 1 morning, I can only offer myself for a bowl of fishballs without the noodles.

Before leaving Yong Peng, we stopped at Eng Hin, this shop selling fok chow biscuits, this is different from the one I tried in Sitiawan. This one is basically a very soft layer of biscuits covering filling that just taste like mang chang kuih to me. Glutinous-peanut kind of taste, not too sweet and is excellent when eaten hot. I also managed to pack some otak-otak buns back from the bakery nearby, yummy!

From Yong Peng, we start to head back, some went to Malacca for satay celup, some Kajang at Rest. Malaysia for kajang satay, and some people like me fly home to sleep. Dinner? Forget it, I can't eat anymore.

Overall, I had a good time, I like what I tried in Seremban, as well as Muar and Batu Pahat. JB is too far and takes a lot of time. Next time, I don't mind doing a south trip again, just exploring more in Muar and BP. <<<(>.<)>>>

Johor Makan Trip - Part 1

After much long planning and talk, we are finally able to do our makan trip again. This is the second one this year, code name, Gems of the South by our semangat logistics plus cameraman. We are heading to Johor this time, the route will take us to Seremban>Muar>Batu Pahat>Johor Bahru. This round, we have 6 cars, my Ranger as usual followed by an Unser, an Alfa, an Avanza, a Jazz and a CRV ;).

We met up at our lead planner's place at Bukit Mahkota, or rather his resort out of the state :P. Thanks to a morning call I have arranged, I was, thank god, not late this time! In fact, I was the first person to arrive at the rendezvous point at 7.20am. Soon, most of the convoy arrived and as usual we get our walkies working, setup our GPS and get going soon enough.

From Bukit Mahkota, we took the old road instead of the highway, since its a beautiful morning and the weather is cooling. N36 lead us to cut through Mantin town before heading into Seremban. At Seremban, things got havoc when we reached our makan spot, the Seremban's wet market. We were told that Tau Kee wantan mee is good but its closed that morning.

Anyhow, at the market we find our individual parking and soon made our way to the market. The food court is located on the top floor of the market. I reached there at 8.30am, immediately head to the stall famous for the Mee Hoon Sotong as told by my colleague, the moment I reached there, they sold the last plate! At 8.30am, they have sold their last plate! At 8.45am I can see them washing up and getting ready to close for the day. Amazing, I think I should start selling this in KL, hehehe... anyone got recipe ar? :P



Anyhow, I then ordered mee hoon sotong from another stall, its basically mee hoon deep fried, then serve with sauce, braised pork plus yau yee (sotong/squid). It's not bad, I would imagine the one I failed to order would have been good. As most of the makan trip's member rushed to order their beef noodles, I went to stall in the middle, can't remember the stall name, maybe some of the makan members can remember. Anyhow, I ordered the dried one as it looks interesting with its own beef gravy and not the usual dark soya sauce. My kawan Blake whom I ordered the soup based beef noodles for later gave me a funny look of course, let's not get there.

To my surprise, the dried beef noodles is really good. Firstly, the gravy is like a thick dry beef sauce, which is served with slices of tender beefs along with other ingredients like peanuts, small pieces of salted vege I think, looks like it but don't taste salty. The noodles used are the thick vermicelli or better known as lai fun usually used in assam laksa. This is one of the best dried beef noodles I had so far, will definately want to come back for more next time!

After breakfast, as the rest are meeting up to continue the journey, I drove to the Ayer Keroh toll in Malacca to pick up my passengers. We eventually met up with the convoy at Tangkak toll which we exited and took the small state road to Highway 23 going passed Sungai Mati to the town of Muar. The entrance to this seaside town leads passed the Muar River before you arrive at the main town area. Its my first time to Muar, so I am glad I have the tour guide sitting in my truck broadcasting through the walkies.

From there, we head to Jalan Haji Abu and parked our vehicles and had lunch at the Kim San Public Cooked-Food Market, (GPS: N2 2.801 E102 34.131) what a name, hehe. Anyhow, looks like a coffee shop to me. Speaking about coffee, you will notice that most of the shops in town have this Cawan Mas coffee brand signboard all around town. Turns out that this is a famous local coffee brand, I actually brought some later and it's good. Also the other unique thing is that the town seems to have sky high antennas to receive Singapore's TV.

Back to Kim San, well, the whole road reminds me of petaling street, as you can see food stalls on both side of the roads and next to it are a few more shops selling food. So much to eat, really didn't know where to start. The moment I reach the entrance of Kim San, our kawan Jack is already there ordering food, I joined him to check out this funny round cake shape glutinous rice with slices of char siew (pork) on top of it. If you buy at least 3 pieces then the stall owner will heat it up for you on a flat pan, action also, must be 3 at least. Next to it are other stalls, selling grilled otak-otak in banana leaves, soya bean drink, etc.



The glutinous rice is ok, quite nice, I ordered a char siew with siew yok rice, a generous portion of meats were given with the rice and its RM2.50 per plate to my delight. The otak-otak is good and fragrant being wrapped with banana leaves.

As we leave the place, I bumped into this stall selling Muar Satay, looks unique, 40 cents a stick and I ordered some to try. The satay looks like its being marinated and dried on thick sauce. As they bbq the satay, they pack cucumber and pineapple then top with peanut sauce. When the satay is ready, its packed with the sauce, taste really great, love it.

After that our cameraman took on a holland tour around Muar town looking for the popular Yong Sheng Confectionery at Jalan Sayang. This place sells just kind of biscuits and local food produces. The only thing that caught my attention here is the Cawan Mas coffee.

As the weather brews, we decided to move on to our next destination, Batu Pahat. We took J31 and head further south passing by all the different parit, funny how every town after that starts with parit, first its Parit Bakar, then Parit Samsu, Parit Jawa, Parit Jamil, Parit Penyengat, etc. Anyhow, someone on the walkie mentioned that Parit Jawa have good assam laksa, so when we are at the Parit Jawa town, we decided to follow a signboard that points to a place selling Assam Pedas. We soon reach this food court next to a muara by the sea. Looks like its a small fishing village as we can see houses by sea after the food court. The crowd at the food court is ok but you can see the roads are busy with vehicles coming in and out that area. As we all get down, we realised that Assam Pedas is actually fish head curry. Since our stomach is still quite filled, we decided to move on after some of the folks took their drinks and photos ;).

Our hero in Unser says that his GPS shows an alternative route back to the main road, so everyone just followed. At first it was small tarmac kampung road, soon its red mud road, but dry and still bearable for most. But later, some part of the road starts to get muddy, you can see some of the cars getting reluctant or thinking about doing a u-turn. But since our hero leader keeps going, we continue, some hits the grass, some just follow, some struggle and I just wham and makes the road worst for those behind me as Joe put it, oppps :P.

After a trails of plantations, we finally made our way out to the main road again heading to Batu Pahat. As the day gets cloudy, we speed up and made our way to Batu Pahat. Quite a busy town with a lot of activities, again, its my first time and again, I have the Batu Pahat local guide in my truck too :). The local guide took us to Chop See Kee to eat wantan mee at Jalan Jerenang (GPS: N1 51.207 E102 55.637). I was told that this place have been in business for more than 50 years, and from the look at the grandma serving us drinks, Jack said, "from the age of the old lady, I am sure its been around that long" hehehe... indicating that she is probably the one whom started it.

Anyway, as we know the wantan mee in the south is slightly different, you don't get the usual dark soya sauce and its mixed with chili sauce. Not bad and something different. I like the feeling of being at small Malaysian towns, feels different and away. Anyhow, from there we move on to a visit the one of the biggest industry in Batu Pahat, the Tua Pek Kong business. You will be amazed how many temples this place have. Route J17 from town lead us to Kampung Segenting in Minyak Beku, its a small village by the sea. That's where the temple lies, there you can see Tua Pek Kong 大伯公, Ma-Zu 妈祖 as well as Palace of Sea Dragon (海龙宫).

This seaside temple is quite scenic, however the main attraction here is not just the sea, but a man made cave that houses 2 giant Arapaimas fish. Its said that if you touch the fish, you will get good luck and prosperous when you buy number. So, the first thing I did there is find the cave, get an available hole and wait for the fish to come! Hehe... but the chicken me hold back when the fish faces its head on me, from close range, no joke, its huge and scary. I only manage to touch the body as it swims away. No wonder didn't kena number after that :(

Since everyone is feeling lucky after the visit, plus we feel we had to do the right thing, and that is go buy number! Hehe... so we stopped to invest in town and contribute to the local economy before heading to the route 50 passing Seri Gading and Parit Raja to get into the NSE at Ayer Hitam toll. From there, we just cruise down heading straight for Johor Bahru.
