KL - Cycling Makan Trip

It was the Raya holidays and I join wildgeeks J&J for a bike ride to Kuala Lumpur downtown from Sri Petaling. We started in Sri Petaling and cycled about 12-13km to Jalan Pasar where we stopped at Taste of Fookchow ( Coordinates: 3.13222, 101.71694) for some famous fookchow fishballs.

We arrived at about 7.45am at the Taste of Fookchow which is located at Jalan Badak in the Jalan Pasar area. It use to be situated at the main Jalan Pasar road next to the wet market and same row as the famous May King. The place only open at 8.00am but the owner was kind enough to open early for us.

Me and Joe got the fookchow fishball noodles in soup while Jack, a fookchow fella ordered the red rice wine chicken noodles. The fookchow fishball is basically fish paste filled with minced pork inside and its absolutely yummy. We actually top up another 10 fishballs because its that good. The chili sauce given with the fishball is a must have, it looks like blended green bird chilies and they are spicy!

The red rice wine noodles are fantastic too, the rice wine flavour is not too heavy and blends in very nicely with the chicken.

You can also buy the fishballs in frozen packets for take-aways to just keep and cook at home. I was actually looking forward to the fookchow pancake which they sell at this shop. Its a very crispy pancake filled with meat/vege inside, the original one have oysters inside but its hard to keep. Unfortunately, its too early and they have not start making it. So, the next time I am in the area, I am going back for some fookchow pancake, and maybe another bowl of fishballs :)

After the noodles, we cycled to Brickfields for some good teh tarik and vadai at Sapporo Curry House. Of course they had a lot more varieties of Indian food here but we can hardly fill more after all the fishballs we got greedy with.

After that, we head back to Sri Petaling through Old Klang Road. More information and photos (with gps locations) on the cycling trip is available at wildgeek's website

Jalan Peel, KL - Yong Tau Foo

If you search around the blogs, most makan blogs will feature Wah Kiow which is a very famous Yong Tau Foo place in Lorong Peel next to Taman Maluri Jusco and IPD Cheras. That reminds me of my working days in Cheras where we used to eat at the chicken shop opposite Wah Kiow and would order some yong tau foo, but the chicken place is no longer around but Wah Kiow is still there.

It was after our mountain bike hashing (see http://wildgeeks.org) and I had like 4 bikes at the back of my truck and I found a parking at Jalan Peel instead of turning into the lorong. I saw a yong tau foo stall just at the corner of Jalan Peel to Lorong Peel and thought that Wah Kiow have move out. So without thinking too much and wanting to be able to watch my truck and all the bikes behind, we just sat and waited for the rest. A phone call later, I realised I am in the wrong shop! Hahaha... anyway, we decided to makan separately because all of us wanted to be able to see our vehicles and bikes.

So anyway, I didn't managed to catch the name of this makan place but its pretty crowded, 5 of us ordered 1 assam fish, 1 char chee yok and lots of yong tau foo (ytf). Instead of making your own ytf, this place you just pick the pieces you want. I let the Rooster do the ordering because I am just too lazy after the hash.

The ytf are alright, I wouldn't say fantastic but its on standard and is not bad. The sui kau however cannot fight with Wah Kiow and the bittergound just cannot fight with the fish paste place in Oldtown.

Assam fish is kembong, that is not too bad while the hakka stew pork (char chee yok) is average, still cannot fight with my dad's :P

Overall is ok, about RM7.50 per person for a lot of food plus drinks ;)

KL - Meng Kee, Char Siew & Chicken

Was in KL for a meeting, got here early for lunch and decided to go to this char siew (chinese bbq pork) place at Tangkat Tong Shin. Meng Kee is one of the most popular place around this area, its was like 10 mins to 12pm and already half the place is filled.

The place is converted from an old house just like most shops along the road. We ordered some Pak Cham Kai (braised chicken) and the famous Char Siew. As usual and yes I know, very unhealthy, I specifically ask for the top and bottom part of the char siew which are usually overcooked, but these dark crunchy part are hard to resist :P.

The chicken is ok, very soft and tender topped with a lot of dark soya sauce like. The char siew is fantastic, although it looks like a mixture of fats and meat, you can hardly tell the differences. Each bite is soft, full of sweet and yummy char siew taste and very tender. You just can't tell the fats and meats. Really wonder what is the secret!

This fantastic meals cost RM18.90 for 2 person excluding drinks! A little steep but the food is good plus its KL. The trend seems to be when the food is good and the place is old, its expensive in KL ;)

Jln Ipoh - Yong Tau Foo

This is a yong tau foo place near the Segambut-Jln Ipoh junction in KL, its been around for quite a long time used to be on the otherside of the road. Its just next to the overhead highway coming from Jalan Duta.

These place start crowding after 12.30pm and its parking will be packed then. I prefer to sit inside the restaurant as it has fan, the porch seems to be hot. Besides the usual yong tau foo, they also have a good rojak stall. Price is standard KL rate and there are a variety of other stuff besides yong tau foo like paper wrap chicken, etc.

KL - R.A. Nasi Lemak

Early weekdays morning in KL there is a busy place selling hot and steamy nasi lemak. This is in Jalan Raja Abdullah, just next to the Bank Pembangunan building at the traffic light crossing with Jalan Sultan Ismail.

This place serve good nasi lemak, there's a wide choice of dishes to choose from here and business is good. Coconut fragrant in the rice is good, sambal and curry is not too spicy, good place for a heavy breakfast :). I took some vege and a piece of fried chicken with mine nasi lemak plus a drink, below RM6, not bad for KL standard. You know KL what also more expensive :P.
